A well-built palapa with quality thatch should last 5–7 years before it needs a full re-thatch — longer with good care. Texas throws a lot at outdoor structures: scorching summers, sudden hailstorms, occasional freezes, and plenty of humidity. Here’s how to keep your palapa looking its best through all of it.
Spring: inspect after winter
After the last freeze, walk around your palapa and look for any thatch that’s shifted, thinned, or shows signs of moisture damage. Winter ice and wind can dislodge sections. Catching small issues in spring is much easier than dealing with water intrusion in summer.
What to look for: Dark spots or discoloration, loose thatch bundles, sagging sections, or gaps in coverage near the edges or peak.
Summer: manage heat and moisture
Direct Texas sun won’t damage quality thatch, but trapped moisture can. If you have a sprinkler system, adjust heads so they’re not routinely soaking the thatch. Make sure water drains away from the base of your posts to avoid rot at ground level.
If you notice birds or insects making homes in your thatch — common in summer — a light application of pest deterrent spray (safe for natural materials) around the edges can help. Ask us which products we recommend.
Fall: prep for winter
Fall is a great time to do a light trim if any thatch is hanging too low or looking ragged at the edges. Clear any leaf buildup that’s accumulated on top — it holds moisture and can accelerate deterioration if left over winter.
After storms: always inspect
North Texas hailstorms can dent metal and crack wood — they can also loosen or damage thatch. After any significant storm, spend five minutes walking around your palapa. Look up at the underside of the canopy from multiple angles. If anything looks compromised, call us before the next rain comes.
The synthetic thatch option
If you prefer a lower-maintenance approach, high-quality synthetic thatch made from UV-stabilized polyethylene looks nearly identical to natural palm leaf and requires almost no maintenance beyond occasional hosing off. It’s the right call for high-traffic commercial installs or clients who want a truly set-it-and-forget-it structure.
