Luxury Backyard

Planning a luxury backyard? Start with shade, then build out

When clients come to us with a big backyard vision — outdoor kitchen, resort-style pool, pergola, lounge area — one of the first questions we ask is: where does the shade structure go? Not because it’s our product, but because it’s genuinely the right place to start.

Why shade anchors everything else

A palapa, pergola, or shade structure is the largest permanent feature in your backyard. It determines traffic flow, sun patterns, and where everything else can logically sit. Build your outdoor kitchen under a palapa and it stays comfortable all afternoon. Put the kitchen in the sun and you’ll roast alongside whatever you’re grilling.

Getting the shade in place first means every subsequent decision — furniture layout, lighting, landscaping — can be made in relation to it rather than around an afterthought.

How to choose the right size

For a luxury backyard, err toward generous. A 16′ or 20′ diameter palapa that feels “too big” on paper almost always looks proportionate once it’s up. An undersized structure feels like an accessory to the yard; a properly sized one feels like the centerpiece.

As a rule of thumb: your shade structure should comfortably accommodate your primary seating group, a dining table if you plan to eat outside, and a couple feet of breathing room on every side.

Integrating with your pool design

If you’re designing around an existing pool, position the structure so it shades the lounge chairs and wet bar area during the hottest part of the day — typically 1–4pm when the sun is southwest. A palapa on the west or northwest edge of your pool deck is usually ideal for Texas properties.

Layering features around your anchor

Once the structure is set, the rest fills in naturally. Outdoor kitchen adjacent to or just outside the shaded zone. Fire pit or lounge seating opposite the kitchen. Lighting in and around the canopy for evening use. Landscaping at the perimeter to soften edges and add privacy.

The result is a backyard that feels designed rather than assembled — because it was planned from the center out, not the edges in.
